Saint Peter's Basilica rises over the tomb of the apostle Peter, at the heart of the Catholic faith and among the grandest churches on earth. The greatest architects of the Italian Renaissance contributed to its construction, among them Bernini, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante, and their work shapes every part of the visit.

We spend about two hours inside the church, moving at a comfortable pace through the chapels and their treasures. We stop at the tombs of John Paul II and John XXIII and before Michelangelo's Pietà, the only work signed by the artist. We also see the place where the remains of St. Peter rest, the chimney from which the smoke rises after a papal election, and the monuments to the Stuart family and to Queen Christina of Sweden.

Our route reaches the chapel where a few privileged couples are married. Guests may caress the feet of the 700-year-old statue of St. Peter and touch the holy door as Catholic pilgrims do. We also go up to the dome, the summit of the basilica, which completes the visit with a view over Rome.
